A
WEEE History:
EU
Directive 2002/96/EC better known as the WEEE (Waste Electronic
& Electrical Equipment) Legislation, became European Law on
The 13th February 2003, and fully implemented within the UK
in July 2007. WEEE is the fastest growing waste stream in the
UK. Each year in the UK throw away over 1.2 million tonnes of
electrical and electronic waste. The equivalent of 150 thousand
double decker buses!
Previously
over 75% of waste electrical goods end up in landfill, where
toxins found within the electrical goods can cause soil and
water contamination, which has severe consequences for wildlife,
human beings, and the environment.
The
European WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Directive
has 3 main objectives, they are:
- The
prevention of waste from electronic and electrical equipment.
- The
re-use, recycling and other forms of recovery of such wastes.
- Minimising
the risks and impact to the environment associated with the
treatment and disposal of end-of-life electrical and electronic
equipment.
